Dear School Community,
Brearley athletics wouldn’t be nearly as exciting without our passionate crowds. We look forward to a high turnout of students, parents and other fans as we kick off the football and soccer seasons.
Sports are a longstanding source of success and pride in Kenilworth, so it has been especially disappointing to see an increase in uncivil behavior among both parents and students in recent years.
With football season underway, know that the Union County Conference announced a new code of conduct after observing the same trend among its member schools.
“Our athletic fields are an extension of our classrooms, and the values of respect and fair play must prevail,” the UCC statement reads.
The conference advised that athletes who engage in unsportsmanlike behavior may be subject to penalties beyond those imposed by the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association. In addition, parents and fans who boo or harass the officials, players, coaches, or other fans will be removed from the game and could be barred from future athletic events.
As members of the Union County Conference, we will enforce this code of conduct as well as the broader consequences outlined in our district’s own civility policy.
Uncivil behavior will not be tolerated.
Later this school year, work will begin to install synthetic turf, replace the track and make other athletic area improvements, all funded through the 2022 referendum.
We planned these projects to create benefits for the entire community, because our schools have always brought people together.
Let’s keep it that way and keep it positive as we cheer on our Bears.
